Turning 65?

If you are turning 65, you need to enroll in Medicare during your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP). This seven-month period goes from three months before you turn 65 until three months after.  For example, if you were born on April 15, you may enroll in Medicare starting January 1st and ending July 30th.

If you don’t sign up during your IEP, you will receive a penalty for as long as you have Medicare part B. You will get another chance to enroll during Medicare’s annual general enrollment period; however, keep in mind that your monthly premiums for Medicare Part B may cost you more because of the penalty.

In most cases, you automatically get Part A starting the first day of the month you turn age 65 If you get benefits from Social Security or the Railroad Retirement Board (RRB).

If you have coverage through a current or former employer, it’s essential to understand how your current coverage works with Medicare before making any decisions.
